On page 420, Chapter 31, I mention my tour of the historic courthouse and its prefabricated metal jail. The courthouse is incorrectly described as “eighteenth” century when that should read “nineteenth” century, though barely. Founded in 1882 after the railroad arrived, Holbrook became the county seat for Navajo County in 1895, edging out Winslow for the honor in a close vote. Completed in 1899, the Gallup brick courthouse, of Richardson architecture, served county residents until 1976, and is now a museum to the western town’s past.
